Welcome to the official documentation for Divi SafeEdit. This plugin is designed to help agencies and freelancers hand off Divi websites without risking layout breakage. By controlling what each WordPress role can change inside the Divi Visual Builder, you keep everyday content edits simple while protecting your complex designs.

2. Key Features Overview

Per-Role Safe Mode

Define exactly what user roles (Editors, Authors, etc.) can do. Restrict adding, deleting, or duplicating modules and rows.

Builder UI Restrictions

Remove the clutter for your clients. Hide the "Design" and "Advanced" tabs entirely so they only focus on the "Content" tab.

Editable Zones & Locks

Set specific lock types on a per-page basis. Define specific editable zones so clients can only touch designated text and image modules.

Revision Safety

Never lose your work. The plugin automatically generates WordPress revision snapshots the moment a client opens the Visual Builder.

3. Installation

Installing Divi SafeEdit is as easy as installing any standard WordPress plugin.

Download the divi-safeedit.zip file from your Elegant Themes account.

Click Upload Plugin at the top of the screen.

Select the ZIP file, click Install Now, and then click Activate.

Prerequisites You must have the Divi Theme, Extra Theme, or Divi Builder Plugin installed and active for Divi SafeEdit to function. PHP 7.4 or higher is required.

4. Role Permissions Setup

The core of Divi SafeEdit is managing what user roles can do. Once the plugin is active, navigate to Divi > SafeEdit (or Settings > Divi SafeEdit if using the standalone builder plugin).

Configuring Safe Mode

In the main settings table, you will see a list of all active WordPress user roles on your site.

Setting	What it does
Enable Safe Mode	Turns on restrictions for this specific role. If off, the user has full builder access.
Hide Design/Advanced Tabs	Removes the styling and custom CSS tabs from the module settings modal. Highly recommended for clients.
Prevent Module Deletion	Stops the user from accidentally deleting modules, rows, or sections.
Prevent Layout Changes	Stops the user from dragging and dropping elements to rearrange the page structure.

Administrator Role By default, the Administrator role has Safe Mode disabled so you do not lock yourself out. If you are setting up an admin account for a client, remember to manually enable Safe Mode for the Administrator role.

5. Divi Role Editor Sync

Divi comes with its own "Role Editor" under Divi > Role Editor. Divi SafeEdit can act as a bridge to this native system.

If you enable Divi Role Editor Sync in the SafeEdit settings, any permissions you configure in SafeEdit will automatically update the corresponding capabilities in Divi's native Role Editor. This ensures there are no conflicts between the two systems and provides a unified permissions structure.

6. Page-Level Controls & Client Notes

Sometimes global role permissions aren't enough, and you need specific rules for specific pages. Divi SafeEdit adds a new meta box to the standard WordPress page/post editor screen.

Using the Page Meta Box

When editing a page in the backend, look for the Divi SafeEdit Controls panel.

Page Lock Override: Force a specific lock status on this page, overriding global role settings. (e.g., Lock down the homepage completely, even for Editors).
Client Notes: Leave a message that will pop up when the client opens the Visual Builder on this specific page. Example: "Please only edit the text in the hero section."

7. Auto-Revisions & Activity Logs

Automatic Revision Snapshots

Client mistakes happen. Divi SafeEdit acts as an insurance policy. Whenever a user with "Safe Mode" enabled opens the Visual Builder, the plugin automatically fires a WordPress revision snapshot before they make any changes.

If they break the layout and click save, you can simply go to the WordPress Revisions interface and restore the snapshot taken right before their session began.

Activity Logging

Navigate to the Activity Log tab in the SafeEdit settings. Here you can see a timestamped history of who opened which pages, what changes were saved, and if any security boundaries were attempted. Logs are grouped by user role for easy filtering.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work with Divi 5?

Yes. Divi SafeEdit is built to support both the legacy Divi 4 builder and the new React-based Divi 5 Visual Builder interfaces.

Will administrators be restricted?

Only if you explicitly check the "Enable Safe Mode" box for the Administrator role in the Divi SafeEdit settings table. By default, admins have full access.

What happens when I uninstall the plugin?

We believe in clean uninstalls. If you delete the plugin, all SafeEdit settings, activity logs, page-level meta data, and synced Divi Role capabilities are permanently removed from your database, leaving no bloat behind.

How do I translate the plugin?

A translation template is available at languages/divi-safeedit.pot. You can use free tools like Loco Translate or Poedit to create .po and .mo files for your specific locale.
